As Washington’s condition worsened throughout the last year, the Orange honored the former guard by wearing orange warmup shirts with “Pearl” and “31” inscribed in white.

“There is no better guy and there’s nobody who has meant more to our basketball program than Dwayne Washington,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said of Washington in January.
Washington, a three-time All-Big East selection, was an All-American guard in his sophomore and junior seasons at Syracuse. He left college after three years and was selected with the 13th overall pick in 1986 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. His NBA career lasted just three seasons, two with the Nets and the last with the Miami Heat.
