“The doctors have said it won’t be long, but we don’t know what that means,” Finney said. “It could be a month, it could be weeks. We’re just accepting that God is ready for him. It’s Pearl’s time.”

Washington, 52, is at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, his hometown. His fiancée Debra Busacco and Finney have been by his side.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other dignitaries proclaimed Saturday to be “Pearl Washington Day” in the New York City, where he spent most of his life. The Syracuse basketball team had also honored Washington last season with “Pearl” inscriptions on their jerseys.

Washington was an All-American guard in his sophomore and junior seasons at Syracuse. He left college after three years and was selected with the 13th overall pick in 1986 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. His NBA career lasted just three seasons, two with the Nets and the last with the Miami Heat.
