The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions announced its ruling on Syracuse’s appeal Wednesday, reinstating one scholarship per year for the next four years. The Orange were supposed to lose 12 total over a four-year span.

Syracuse had also asked the NCAA to consider not vacating wins as part of its appeal, but the Committee on Infractions determined that it would uphold the vacation of 101 of the men’s basketball team’s wins under Jim Boeheim’s tenure.
The subtraction of 101 wins drops Boeheim down from 969 to 868 in his career, enough to fall from second to sixth place overall on the all-time college basketball wins list, according to Syracuse.com.
“The appeal decision results in the reduction of a significant penalty,” Syracuse Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Kevin Quinn said in a statement.
“We strongly believed the original scholarship penalty was too severe when compared to other infraction cases. Also, the scholarship reduction penalty directly impacts current and future student-athletes and their academic and athletic opportunities. We remain disappointed in the decision to vacate a significant amount of men’s basketball wins, a decision that was upheld.”

The NCAA has not yet announced a decision in Jim Boeheim’s individual appeal, so any change in the status of his NCAA-mandated nine-game suspension during ACC play is still pending.
