One of those people is former Michigan State and Jets linebacker Taiwan Jones (not be confused with the former NFL running back). But what makes Jones’ case unique is the fact he signed a contract with the Memphis Express less than 24 hours before investor Tom Dundon decided to suspend operations.
AAF TIMELINE: The events that led to the football league closing
The Express announced Jones’ contract at 10:36 a.m. ET Tuesday. Reports about the league shutting down started at 12:51 p.m., just a few hours later.
His story shows just how much of a shock this news truly was to everyone not named Tom Dundon. In fact, the sudden news meant teams had no plans for their players. These athletes who signed three-year deals with the league (every player has the same contract) now have no idea where their next source of income will come from.
Contracts were non-guaranteed with a maximum of $250,000. Players would earn $70,000 for their first season. But according to Darren Rovell, the players’ contracts were “immediately terminated and there is no severance pay.” Their last paycheck was for Week 8’s game, so players won’t receive the full $70,000.
To make matters worse, teams couldn’t send their players home.
Some of the reactions from players below reflect that report.
A Salt Lake Stallions podcast which kept in touch with players also said, “Many who were on the road are currently trying to figure out transportation back home.” A player told a San Diego Fleet podcast, “AAF said health benefits are only available till the end of the month. We were promised benefits until the end of December if we finished the season.”
Another player told the Fleet podcast, “AAF just told us we have our hotel until Sunday and that we have to find our own way home.”
