The rumor is so popular, in fact, that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on the idea during an investor’s Q&A. He did suggest, before commenting, that questions about game mechanics would be best left to the company’s labels (namely Rockstar), but as a whole, the company always pays attention to innovations such as battle royale. His biggest qualm with the popular genre having a place in Red Dead Redemption 2 is that it risks becoming “derivative.”
To that effect, Zelnick stated, “our goal is to be as innovative as possible. Titles, even really good titles that are derivative never seem to do as well as innovations that are unexpected.” He even offered the first Red Dead Redemption as an example of innovation, as westerns didn’t typically have a place in video games beforehand. With all that in mind, Zelnick also commented, “That said of course we play in the world and are informed by what’s going and bring consumers what they want.”
Considering his final comment, gamers seem to want more and more battle royale, as its popularity has continued to increase. While the accuracy of the leak is unknown, Zelnick neither truly confirmed nor denied the mode’s existence in Red Dead Redemption 2, but it seems likely due to the popularity, especially considering the similar-styled Motor Wars of GTA Online. Another GTA-related rumor that could be occurring in Red Dead 2 is the first-person mode, but like the existence of the battle royale mode, nothing is certain.
With a few months to go before the game’s release, hopefully there will be some sort of confirmation one way or the other about battle royale in the wild west. At this point, as Zelnick seemed to suggest, it depends on what consumers want (pre-order discounts are popular). Tell us, Ranters, would you like to see battle royale in Red Dead Redemption 2?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is scheduled to release on October 26, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
