Specifically, the question referred solely to PlayStation 2 entries to the series, meaning Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and GTA: Vice City Stories, some of which have been made available via PS4 emulation. Fans may be pleased to know that Take-Two Interactive didn’t reject the idea, and even went so far as to say that it’s something that Rockstar Games will eventually decide upon. However, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick also indicated that Take-Two has strict guidelines on whether any remake project will take off.
Zelnick made it clear that revenue and profit wasn’t going to be the main goal of any remakes of the Grand Theft Auto PS2 games, which is rather remarkable given that they were discussing the matter with their investors. Instead, Zelnick had this to say:
Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games are focusing on the importance of the player experience rather than the ability to make a buck, which will probably please many gamers. Considering that both companies are still raking in money from Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V has sold 65 million units, clearly the two companies aren’t hurting financially.
While Grand Theft Auto V is still performing extremely well, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be news from Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive anytime soon. The two companies also revealed that Rockstar will announce a new game in the near future. It was previously leaked that Grand Theft Auto VI is in development, but chances are the announcement will be about something else, since it’s only in the preliminary stages of development.
Although the creator of the very first GTA game was converting Grand Theft Auto to a fully 3D game several years ago, it may be a while yet before the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games will be upgraded. Fans can at least rest easy knowing that if Rockstar decides to remake them that they will meet the high standards of all the other games.
