But Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also had some other things to say while speaking to investors on Wednesday, and Gamespot notes that special attention was paid to the topic of remastering older games. An analyst asked the CEO if Take-Two was thinking about releasing additional remasters after the launch of Bioshock: The Collection.

“Potentially yes,” Zelnick replied. “Any time we have something that goes well or doesn’t go well it definitely informs our decision making, but we don’t have anything specific to announce. The good news is we have a rich trove of intellectual property and there are definitely more things that will be brought to the market in the future, but nothing we would announce on today’s call.”

It’s not surprising that Zelnick didn’t want to give out too much information about Take-Two’s future plans, but it’s also pretty clear what the question might have been about. Rumors about a possible remaster for the original Red Dead Redemption circulated online for months prior to the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2. Some might think that the announcement of the next game in the series would put the remaster rumors to rest, but it’s worth repeating that some of those rumors pointed to Rockstar working on more than one Red Dead project.

What’s unclear at this point is if Rockstar and/or Take-Two would still have the resources to focus on a remaster for Red Dead Redemption with RDR 2 currently slated for Fall 2017. To that end, let’s point out that BioShock: The Collection was remastered by Blind Squirrel Games even though the now defunct Irrational Games and 2K Marin were the developers behind the original trilogy. In other words, Rockstar would not necessarily have to handle a Red Dead remaster, freeing up the studio to put all of its effort into Red Dead Redemption 2.

Remastering old games has become a pretty big trend this generation with everyone from Square Enix to Naughty Dog getting in on the action. Given that RDR 2 will be hitting stores more than seven years after the release of Red Dead Redemption, it would make sense for Take-Two to want to bring all gamers up to speed before the next game in the series comes out. For now, Xbox One fans can at least play Red Dead Redemption through the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility program and Red Dead Revolver is now playable on PlayStation 4.
