This is according to Tales From the Borderlands game director Nick Herman, who recently revealed as much alongside several other Telltale and Gearbox staff in order to give an oral history of the title’s development to the Campo Santo Quarterly Review. Although no exact figures were mentioned during the discussion, Herman said that the series simply wasn’t performing in the business department in the way the studio had hoped.

With Tales From the Borderland not receiving nearly enough in profits in order to justify a continuation of the series, the developer was forced to finish the game’s production as fast as possible so as to allow staffers to move on to other projects that were far more lucrative. Although Herman initially resisted the situation so as to conclude the series properly, he ultimately agreed to give up most of his staff by trying to wrap up development with a bare bones crew.

While we here at Game Rant consider Tales From the Borderlands to be among the top 10 best video games of 2015, it’s important to note that more often than not some of the highest quality and most beloved projects – no matter the art form – ultimately succumb to the whims of commerce. With this being the case, since TFtB wasn’t as profitable as it needed to be, it looks as if a followup is incredibly unlikely.

“Tales was my life for two years, and internally it was perceived as a failure. Critically it was a huge success, but from a sales and production standpoint, it wasn’t awesome.”
