Tales of Arise takes place between the two worlds of Dahna and Rena. Rena’s superior technology causes it to hold power over Dahna, pillaging its resources and enslaving its people. The four playable characters come from both of these worlds and, despite their different pasts, come together to forge a new path into the future.

Alphen

Alphen is the protagonist of Tales of Arise who has a mysterious past. Hailing from Dahna, he has lost his memories as well as the ability to feel physical pain. In the trailers, Alphen fights with two different swords: a standard sword and a blazing sword that he borrows from Shionne after meeting her. The blazing sword seems to be part of Alphen’s Mystic Arte as he slashes enemies with a fiery inferno. Although little else is revealed about Alphen, the story preview suggests that he’s fighting for his freedom from Rena and seeing his fellow Dahnans suffer has built resentment within him.

Shionne

Shionne is another protagonist of Tales of Arise who is originally from the planet of Rena. Shionne is cursed by something called the “Thorn” which deals immense pain to people who touch it. She wields a rifle in battle but also has the ability to heal others with Astral Artes due to her Renan bloodline. As showcased in trailers, her Mystic Arte allows her to conjure bullets in the air while firing a beam at enemies. Labelled as a traitor, Shionne joins forces with Alphen as she revolts against Rena. However, her true intentions remain unknown despite aiding the Dahna liberation efforts.

Rinwell

Rinwell is a playable character in Tales of Arise and is a Dahnan who has the strange ability to wield Astral Artes, something that only Renans should be able to do. As a result, Rinwell has been hiding from both Dahnans and Renans before she joins up with Alphen and is immediately wary of Shionne. Wielding a spellbook, Rinwell can launch projectiles at enemies or utilize elemental Artes. Specializing in aerial combat, Rinwell’s Mystic Arte traps enemies in a giant whirlwind before following it up with bursts of light. Rinwell also travels with a baby owl companion named Hootle.

Law

Law is a playable character in Tales of Arise who is a part of the Renan secret police group called “Bull’s Eye” despite being a Dahnan himself. The police group ensures the stability of Rena’s reign and Law initially confronts Alphen’s group when they arrive in the region of Cyslodia. Law is a martial artist and this is reflected in his style of melee combat centered around punches and kicks. His Mystic Arte infuses his fists and legs with lightning before striking foes down.

Tales of Arise releases September 10 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
