Before getting involved in accidents of his own, teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. offered his restrictor-plate advice to Elliott, while others condemned the rookie’s way of driving.

“Get near that spotter for the No. 24 and tell him don’t drag the brake. Don’t lift,” Earnhardt said on the team’s radio early in the race.

“Hey, let the No. 24 know I cut him a break there or else his car would have looked the same way it did at Daytona (wrecked),” Denny Hamlin said.

“The No. 24 is going to cause “The Big One,” I can tell you that,” added Martin Truex Jr.

Greg Biffle had perhaps the meanest words to Elliott, saying on the No. 16 radio, “Hey, go tell that [expletive] in the No. 24, if he comes down and he ain’t clear he’s f— in trouble. I mean the guy’s been driving like a f— moron all day. I’ve been watching him.”

While others were upset at Elliott, who started on the pole en route to a fifth-place finish, team owner Rick Hendrick was pleased.

“Great job, buddy. You got a lot of your daddy [Hall of Famer Bill Elliott] in you,” Hendrick said after the race.
