The former Alabama quarterback went on 99.1-FM in Tuscaloosa and criticized the Crimson Tide’s leadership and questioned whether or not head coach Nick Saban was handcuffing offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin “like I’ve known Coach to do in the past.”
First, Saban responded to McCarron’s remarks on Wednesday’s SEC conference call.
Add Fran Tarkenton to the list. Only he wasn’t as diplomatic as Saban was in his comments on WJOX’s The Opening Drive in Birmingham.
“Oh gosh. AJ McCarron. Did he go to class? I mean, really. Did he make the league or not? I mean, really. He needs to be quiet,” the former Georgia QB and NFL Hall of Famer said. “He was so fortunate to play in that program. He’s an average quarterback at best. He played fine. He couldn’t have played anywhere else but Alabama, and to make any kind of comment is just disrespectful. He shouldn’t have made it he should keep his mouth shut and praise Saban and Alabama for the rest of his life.”
But McCarron’s wife has his back. You remember Katherine Webb, right?

She had this to say on Facebook after the backlash from McCarron’s comments.
“Dear Bama fans:
“We love Y’all so much! Don’t read into the crazy headlines some of the media puts out trying to get you to read their article for more traffic. Some of these twisted writers love to take a sentence out of someone’s interview and twist it out of context into something negative, when it wasn’t meant to be at all. AJ loves the team, coaches and players whole heartedly. Heck, he even has it tattooed on his chest. lol It’s not over yet!! We support UA all the way till the end, no matter what.”
Well, there you have it.
